Warning: serious drool-fest coming in hot. Danish pastries have achieved world-famous acclaim for a reason, so if you’re dropping by Denmark’s capital city, you’ll naturally be wanting to schedule in a few pastry pit stops along the way. Here’s the best bakeries in Copenhagen you should know about.

Juno the Bakery

Located in the hip neighbourhood of Østerbro, get your chops around the warm, flaky buns of former Noma pastry chef Emil Glaser. His bakery is a magnet for the Insta generation who come flocking for their fill of the perfectly formed selection of oven-fresh bakes, from seasonally filled doughnuts and brioches to the tarts and croissants. Like most Copenhagen bakeries, expect to queue down the street for your turn. The wait? Totally worth it. Plus, you can watch the chefs at work through the interior window while you do it. Psst, the cardamom bun is utterly unreal.

Copenhagen’s oldest bakery needs no introduction. Follow your nose to the picture-perfect Latin Quarter where a tempting selection of the sweet and savoury kind lure you in from the window. Having been in the baking game since 1652, you’d think they’d know how to turn out a pretty decent cake by now. Can confirm, yes, they can. Their sticky cinnamon rolls are stuff of legend – so much so, every Wednesday they sell no less than a whopping 4,000 of them.

Hart Bageri

Form an orderly line. Hart Bageri has amassed something of a cult following since its original opening in the Frederiksberg neighbourhood of Copenhagen in 2018. Founded by former head baker at San Francisco’s Tartine Bakery – an immensely popular spot – these days, the daily-changing buns and bakes at its 11 sites across the city are ready to lull you into a sugar-fuelled reverie. The original location still has by far the most choice in case you want to make life even harder for yourself. Choosing from the groaning counter is definitely the trickiest part.

Meyers Bageri

Swinging open daily at 7am on the dot, Meyers’ sinfully delicious goods are worth sniffing out. The first site opened back in 2010, now boasting bakery locations in Nørrebro, Østerbro, City, and Amager. Whether it’s the dark rye bread, thebirkes, cinnamon swirl, butter croissants or chocolate treats, there’s something to tickle everyone’s fancy. Top tip: if you bring your own container, they’ll even gift you your own sourdough starter for free.

BUKA Bakery

City centre settlers will no doubt want to make a break for the counter loads of sweet treats at BUKA. Its Kongensgade store is in striking distance of Rosenborg Castle, and if not, there are four other sites dotted throughout the city. Golden layers, creamy centres, and ridiculously good loaves made with organic Danish flours are all lying in wait.
